SCAD AnimationFest is poised to make its return for its yearly three-day event in Atlanta, scheduled for September 25-27, under the auspices of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). This year’s festival will pay tribute to Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, the creators behind Disney’s beloved series “Phineas and Ferb,” alongside Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, directors of the Netflix sensation “KPop Demon Hunters.” Attendees can look forward to exclusive premieres, including a sneak peek screening of “The Mighty Nein,” and discussions featuring industry experts from Netflix, Disney, Crunchyroll, Warner Bros. Animation, and SCAD scholars.
SCAD President Paula Wallace conveyed her enthusiasm for the return of the festival, noting the fusion of nostalgia with modern animation trends. The event offers SCAD students a chance to connect with industry veterans and display their creations, such as the SCAD Student Spotlight films “Inkwashed” and “Blood and Bamboo.”
The festival will commence with a panel showcasing Disney alums and a behind-the-scenes glimpse presented by Ozlem Akturk on “The Tiny Chef Show.” A key moment of the event will be the SCAD AnimationFest Legends in Animation Award presentation, honoring Povenmire and Marsh, followed by a screening and dialogue regarding “The Mighty Nein.”
The festival will progress with screenings and panels, featuring Warner Bros. Animation’s “Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires” and a special showing of “KPop Demon Hunters,” culminating in a K-pop concert experience. Director Chris Appelhans will be awarded the SCAD AnimationFest Impact Award and engage in a Q&A session.
SCADFILM director Molie Brock highlighted the festival’s significance in offering students pragmatic insights and career pathways. For additional information on passes and the festival itinerary, please visit the official SCAD AnimationFest website.
